Art and Design
Welcome to the Art & Design Department at Kear Campus!
Purpose and Aims of the Course:
The S1 Art & Design course is designed to meet the requirements of the third level Experiences and Outcomes from a Curriculum for Excellence.
Through art and design, learners have rich opportunities to be creative and to experience inspiration and enjoyment. They explore a wide range of two- and three-dimensional media and technologies through practical activities, and create, express, and communicate ideas. Their studies of the works of artists and designers enhance their enjoyment and deepen their knowledge and understanding.
Examples of student Art work
- Students will experiment with a range of media and technologies to create images and objects, using their understanding of their properties.
- Students will use and combine the visual elements (line, tone, shape, colour, pattern, texture, and form) and concepts to convey ideas, thoughts, and feelings in both expressive and design work.
- Through observing and recording, students will create material that shows accuracy of representation.
- While working through a design process in response to a design brief, students can develop and communicate imaginative design solutions.
- Students will respond to the work of artists and designers by discussing their thoughts and feelings.
- Students will give and accept constructive comment on my own and others’ work.
In addition, if pupils choose to study Art & Design in S2 and S3, the BGE course leads on to continued development of skills and knowledge in the contexts above at both third and fourth level. In S3 pupils will explore different techniques and media within their expressive work, and pupils will complete a ‘mini design project’ in class to learn about how to follow the Design Process and gain confidence using materials and techniques.
In the senior phase, pupils will develop their art and design skills further to achieve national qualifications, completing their expressive and design units as well as developing their critical skills in analysing fine art and design as well as giving greater understanding of context in the history of art and design. Pupils will also have the option to study Creative Industries and Photography.

In the past these have included the Glasgow Street Art Tour, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, and the Riverside Museum. Students also work collaboratively on various projects such as these display boards, incorporating the school ethos and improving the environment of the school.
