Science

In the main school building, we have a fully equipped Science Lab where you can learn about Science and get the chance to try out some experiments for yourself.

In S1 and S2, you will learn a mixture of Chemistry (materials and how they behave), Biology (all about living things) and Physics (how things work) and the ways that these are important in everyday life. In S3, you can start working towards a National 3 Science qualification.

If you decide to take Science as an option in Senior Phase, you have lots of choices. Each subject is divided into 3 units, which are briefly described below.

Biology (National 3, 4 or 5)

Cell Biology

You will learn all about different types of cells and microorganisms and about DNA, genes and proteins. You will investigate some of the controversial procedures in Biology and learn to form an opinion based on evidence.

Multicellular Organisms

In this unit, you will learn about the human body, including the digestive, circulatory and reproductive systems. You will find out about variation in populations and why this is important. We will look at the differences between plants and animals and discover some of the commercial uses of plants.

Life on Earth

Learn about ecosystems and biodiversity. Find out how human activities are affecting the planet and learn about how food is produced.

Chemistry (National 3, 4 or 5)

Chemical Changes and Structure

Learn about atoms, chemical bonding, chemical reactions and energy changes. Explore acids and bases. Improve your practical skills by doing experiments.

Nature’s Chemistry

Learn about different fuels and how energy is generated. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of renewable and non-renewable energy. Learn about plants and why they are so important- for food, for products and for energy.

Chemistry in Society

This Unit is all about materials and their properties- why do we choose a material for a specific purpose and why does it behave the way that it does?

Environmental Science (National 4 or 5)

The Living Environment

You will learn that all living things are interdependent and see how things are connected through the Carbon and Nitrogen cycles.

Earth’s resources

Planet Earth has lots of resources which are useful to humans. You will learn about the different types of resources and how to make best use of them.

Sustainability

This unit will help you understand what is meant by the term “Sustainability.” You will learn about the impact humans have on our environment and be able to discuss the responsibilities that we share, in order to preserve resources for the future.

Science (National 3 or 4)

  • Fragile Earth
  • Learn about energy, renewable and non renewable fuels and how food is produced.
  • Human Health
  • What do we need to be healthy? Look at diet and lifestyle factors and learn about vaccines and how they work.
  • Applications of Science.
  • How is science useful in everyday life? How do we communicate? Where do new materials come from? How can we use our knowledge of Science to improve society?

Whichever subject you choose, you will also develop problem solving skills and practical technique through experimental work and investigations. At National 4, you will complete an Added Value Unit in addition to the units above. For National 5, you will complete an assignment which will be externally assessed.
