Mathematics

Mathematics is so important in our everyday lives! Maths is everywhere!

A good qualification in mathematics is not only seen as one of the most valuable to employers, training providers, colleges, and universities, it also helps people to make sense of the world around them and enables them to make informed decisions.

Learning maths helps young people develop skills required to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make good choices. Developing essential numeracy skills allows learners to participate fully in society.

Young people will learn all about mathematics, its place and history in the world, and its everyday implications in real-life, such as in finance, science, technologies, and engineering. Below are some links to useful websites.

 Mathematics Courses Offered

National 3 Applications of Mathematics… consists of three units – Manage Money and Data, Shape, Space and Measure, and Numeracy. The course has no external exam – it is entirely internally assessed.

MANAGE MONEY AND DATA: The general aim of this Unit is to enable learners to apply their skills, knowledge and understanding of mathematics and numeracy to manage money and data in real-life contexts. Learners will build on their mathematical and numerical skills to determine factors affecting income and expenditure, budgeting and saving. Learners will also organise, present and interpret data based on real-life contexts.

SHAPE, SPACE AND MEASURE: The general aim of this Unit is to enable learners to apply their skills, knowledge and understanding of shape, space and measures in real-life contexts. Learners will build on their mathematical and numerical skills by using measures and elementary geometry to tackle real-life situations.

National 4 Mathematics

Highly recognised within the world of work, specifically with employers that do not require certificates of achievement from further educational establishments such as College or University. The course consists of three units: Numeracy, Expressions and Formula, and Relationships and an additional Added Value unit.

The course has no external SQA exam, it is entirely internally assessed. Successful completion of the National 4 Mathematics course may allow entry to the National 5 Mathematics if the learner can also demonstrate a solid understanding of Level 4 maths concepts from the Broad General Education.

,

The Added Value Unit assessment consists of two papers (non-calculator and calculator) and covers all material in the previous three units. This test will be used to assess all knowledge at the end of the course. Although this is an internal process, it will be carried out during lessons under assessment conditions, similar to an SQA exam.

National 5 Mathematics

Fast-paced and challenging course and should only be undertaken by applicants who are already secure in their understanding of elementary aspects of algebra and trigonometry. Learners should have demonstrated an excellent understanding of Level 4 mathematics in the Broad General Education, prior to beginning this course. If learners are successful and achieve a grade A/B in the National 5 exam, they will be encouraged to be presented at Higher Maths level in S5/6 which is often a requirement to enter further education opportunities.

Learners will enhance prior skills and develop a knowledge and understanding of the following areas, however, this is not an exhaustive list: Algebraic Operations, Fractions, Percentages, Trigonometry, Statistics, Linear Relationships, Quadratic Functions/Graphs, Vectors and Surds/Indices.

Numeracy… can be assessed at National 3, 4 or 5 level depending on ability and can also act as a standalone unit.

Learners have the option, based on ability, to “mix and match” Numeracy levels with the mathematics award that they are working towards such as:

National 3 Maths complimented with… National 3 or 4 Numeracy

National 4 Maths complimented with… National 4 or 5 Numeracy

National 5 Maths complimented with… National 5 Numeracy

The general aim of the Numeracy Unit is to develop learners’ numerical and information handling skills to solve straightforward, real-life problems involving number, money, time and measurement. As learners tackle real-life problems, they will decide what numeracy skills to use and how to apply those skills to an appropriate level of accuracy. Learners will also interpret graphical data and use their knowledge and understanding of probability to identify solutions to straightforward real-life problems involving money, time and measurement. Learners will use their solutions to make and explain decisions. Learners will be allowed to use a calculator in these assessments.

Alternative courses and Higher-Level Maths can be offered based on the learners needs, achievements or any conditions set by Colleges, Universities and Employers.

Resources

In Kear Campus and associated support bases, we try to provide learners with a variety of learning experiences to help them gain an appreciation of where maths fits into the wider world. Teachers use different approaches to help young people develop their numeracy skills, including active classroom learning activities, outdoor learning and traditional methods where textbooks/worksheets are utilised. Kear also has a yearly subscription to an online learning resource called Maths Workout where children can make great use of ICT. Learners can revise the skills that they have developed during lessons and assess their confidence with each level and topic. The website offers a range of tasks and differentiated materials based on the individual learner’s progress. There are also problem solving and puzzle tasks within the website, for young people to utilise. Our login details are as follows:

Clydesdale Support Base - Maths

BGE (S1 -S3)

During the broad general education (BGE) phase, our young people work through CfE experiences and outcome from the Maths and Numeracy curriculum. In addition to developing our learners to achieve the highest possible levels of numeracy and cognitive skills, we aim to also develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work.  Due to the small class sizes, each pupil is afforded the opportunity to work at their own pace and challenge so they can experience challenge and success in equal measures.

Senior Phase (S4 - S6)

In the senior phase, our young people continue to work through fluency-building activities, rigorous tasks and activities that further develop their ability to communicate their findings. At this stage of their maths careers, young people will take qualifications and courses that suit their ability and interests.
