Careers

My name is Jim Little, I am based in Kear Campus School and work with all pupils who attend the main school. I also support young people at the East Kilbride, Hamilton, Clydesdale and Cathkin bases. Furthermore, I contribute to transition support for P7 pupils.

My role is to help encourage young people to recognise and enhance their skills. By working together to identify a young person’s strengths, it develops the understanding of the routes and pathways open to them. This in turn, allows them to make informed decisions from when S2 subject choices are selected, to senior phase options and beyond.

Career Management Skills

Career Management Skills are key to creating a pathway to secure a post-school destination. They are based around 4 main themes:

  • Self – understanding who you are, including your personality, likes and interests, values, motivations and learning style.
  • Strengths – knowing what you are good at, what skills you already have and what you need to work on. It will also allow you to make plans on how to improve those areas of development, perhaps through work placements, volunteering or wider achievements.
  • Horizons – knowing what pathways are available to you, for example college, university, apprenticeships, employment.
  • Networks– making connections and recognising who is able to help you on your journey to succeed.  In fact, 80% of apprenticeships and jobs are sourced this way. Taking advantage of the knowledge that your teachers have to offer, as well as seeking advice from our careers advisor and a professional in the area you want to pursue will be extremely valuable.

To help identify more about yourself, your strengths and your skills, you should complete the activities under the “My Career Options” tab on My World of Work

This will help you identify possible industries, careers and routes to get you where you want to be.  You can also find videos helping you navigate My World of Work by clicking this link.
